With a ratio of about 25% in total, PNET is the second most common CNS tumour among children and adolescents (after the low grade gliomas). In Germany, each year about 90 children and adolescents below 15 years are newly diagnosed with a PNET. This corresponds to an incidence rate of 0.7 per 100,000 children.
Accounting for nearly 20%, the medulloblastoma is the most common malignant solid tumour occurring during childhood and adolescence. At times young adults are also affected. The patients’ average age at diagnosis ranges between five and seven years. Boys are affected more often than girls (sex ratio about 1.5:1).
Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumours (stPNET) occur rarely. They account for about 5% of all CNS tumours occurring during childhood and adolescence. In general, children with stPNET are slightly younger than children with medulloblastoma. Boys and girls are nearly equally affected.
