The actual radiation does not take long – for example, as long as two favourite songs – and it does not hurt.

During this short time, patients can listen to music using their headphones, for example. Meanwhile, the radiation team leaves the room, but observes the patient through a glass pane or via cameras and can communicate with them at any time via a microphone and vice versa. Parents can stay close to the irradiation room during treatment.

Depending on the treatment plan, some patients are irradiated once a day, others twice a day. There is a break of about six hours between two daily sessions. During this time, the children can go home or go to school. If the place of residence is too far away from the radiation centre or if chemotherapy is taking place parallel to radiotherapy, there is usually the possibility of spending the time in the clinic (clinic nursery school, clinic school or Ronald-McDonald House).
